SEX sells and Townsville’s first Sexpo is expected to inject up to $3 million into the local economy.
Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre will host the event, the first ever held outside a capital city, from May 25-27.
Sexpo general manager Rob Godwin was in Townsville yesterday to scope out local business owners keen to jump on board.
Forty per cent of the 106 retail spaces sold in 2 1/2 days and Mr Godwin expected to sell out this month.
“That is a good seal of approval for Townsville,” he said. “I think if we position it correctly and get support from local people, it will be a great event in Townsville.”
Mr Godwin was excited about Townsville’s proposed “super stadium”.
“We will commit to (an expo) every two years in Townsville if this grand vision stadium goes ahead,” he said.
Mr Godwin expected 15,000-20,000 people to attend the Townsville Sexpo over the three days.
It will feature body painters, hourly stage shows for men, women and couples, performances by Badboys and hypnotist Mark Anthony, and free sex seminars hosted by Dr Nikki Goldstein.
There will also be an outdoor adult carnivale, with a ghost train converted into a sex train, a $70,000 lap-dance tent illuminated through the walls, a ferris wheel and inflatable adult amusements.
Sexpo, an 18+ event, is the world’s No.1 adult lifestyle show, having started in Australia 17 years ago.
“It’s a youthful market but they are not all young people going to these shows. There are couples who want to get the best out of their lives,” Mr Godwin said.
Tickets are available at the door, at sexpo.com.au or from Sweethearts The Adult Shop at Hermit Park.
